Season One: Episode 02

the cost of pride

What is the cost of visibility? This year, Uganda’s queer community won’t be holding a Pride march. They haven’t been able to since 2016 when police raided a Pride event. In this episode, we ask, ‘when does the cost of visibility become too high?’ We meet drag queen Poison Ivy who was caught up in the raid and he shares with us the radical changes he had to make to his appearance to stay safe. We also talk to the organiser of the 2018 Pride march and explore their responsibility to the community—especially young members who may be attending their first ever queer event.
